Maui Food And Entertainment

Food on Maui is generally of excellent quality because there is a ton of competition here and mediocre restaurants do not survive for very long. There is a wide choice of offerings from very pricey gourmet restaurants to the traditional chains found all over the U.S. Expect prices to be substantially higher here than in your hometown. Fish is always a good choice since the waters surrounding Maui are teeming with great tasting fish. Maui has attracted some top notch chefs, so a visit here can be a gourmet extravaganza, both to the palate and the pocketbook. Many chefs create interesting fushion dishes known here as Pacific rim fare. Certainly try different varieties of fish when you are here. Opakapaka, a Hawaiian pink snapper, is the king of the red snapper family in terms of taste. Widely available is mahi mahi, a flaky, mild white fish, ono, somewhat firmer and very tasty and ahi, which is tuna and darker in color, but certainly nothing like the canned variety!

Maui grows much of its own produce and you might see such produce advertised on menus such as 'kula greens'. The Hawaiian islands are also known for tropical fruits such as pineapple, coconut and papaya. A good place to sample these products is at the Maui Tropical Plantation, where you can take a tour and hear about how these products are grown.

No first visit to Maui would be complete without watching the hula. This is the famous dance of Hawaii and watching this lovely dance will, if nothing else, remind you that there is a distinct Hawaiian culture worth learning about. One way of seeing the hula performed is attending a luau, where you will also partake of traditional Hawaiian food, including roast pig. Most large hotels offer luaus on certain days of the week. Check with your hotel or make a reservation for the Old Lahaina Luau, considered to be the best luau on Maui. Hula is often performed at shopping centers or featured on certain nights in hotel bars. Just check around and you can catch some free hula without paying the hefty pricetag for a luau. Another way to see hula plus a whole lot more is to see Ulalena, a high tech Polynesian show currently performing at the Maui theater in Lahaina.

For those 21 and over, highly recommended is Warren and Annabelle's magic and comedy show performing nightly in Lahaina. This show is both amazing and laugh out loud, rolling in the isles funny and may be very well be the most fun evening you have on Maui.
